In 1715, James Ogilvy, son of the third Earl, took part in a Jacobite uprising against the Crown, and was therefore punished by being attained; therefore, at his father's death two years later, he was unable to inherit the title.
The earldom of Findlater, bestowed on James Ogilvy, Lord Ogilvy of Deskford, in 1638, was united in 1711 with the earldom of Seafield and became dormant after the death of James Ogilvy, the 7th earl, in October 1811.
The latter's son, David Stanley William Drummond Ogilvy, the 8th earl (1856-1900), served in Egypt in 1882 and 1885, and was killed on the nth of June 1900 during the Boer War while at the head of his regiment, the 12th Lancers.

Aldborough was probably the capital of the Brigantes before the Romans arrived.
In 1299 the burgesses of Aldborough and Boroughbridge were given the right to return two MPs for each town to the Parliament of 1300, one of the very early Parliaments.
The rebel Earl of Lancaster was defeated by Sir Andrew Harclay and sought refuge in the church, usually a place of sanctuary.

Aldborough is a former parliamentary borough located in the West Riding of Yorkshire, abolished in the great reform act of 1832.
In the 18th century, Aldborough was a pocket borough controlled by the Duke of Newcastle.
Pitt represented Aldborough for two-and-a-half years, but having fallen out with Newcastle and been dismissed from his ministry, he was forced to find a new constituency when he next needed to be re-elected to the Commons in 1756.

Brockley Park, formerly occupied by the Earl of Roden, and now the residence and property of W. Farrer, Esq., is pleasantly situated on the opposite side of the town.
This town, which is of recent date, owes its origin to Edward, late Earl of Aldborough, who, towards the close of the last century, conferred upon it his family name, "Stratford," and distinguished it from other places of that name by the adjunct which describes its situation on the Slaney.
The district parish, also called Rathbran, is a perpetual curacy, in the diocese of Leighlin, endowed in 1792 by Edward, second Earl of Aldborough, with a rent-charge of £50 out of the Stratford estate, and in the patronage of Col. John Wingfield Stratford.

Aldborough House, one of the grandest of the Dublin residences of the eighteenth-century nobility, was erected at a cost of £40,000, and was so splendidly complete, that it contained even a theatre.

Farther south are the villages of Timolin and Moone, the latter on the Greece, near Belan, a seal of the earl of Aldborough.
Gerald earl of Kildare, being summoned to England to answer various charges of this nature to which he had exposed himself in his capacity of lord justice, left his son Lord Thomas Fitzgerald, a rash youth of twenty, his deputy.
A report shortly after reached Ireland that the earl had been put to death, which so incensed Lord Thomas that he threw up his office of deputy, A.D. 1534, and entered into open rebellion, in which he was joined by the five brothers of the earl.
