he JOHN MURRAY, 2nd earl and 1st marquess of Atholl (163 II 703), fu n of the 1st earl and of Jean, daughter of Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, was born on the 2nd of May 1631.
In 1670 he became earl of th allibardine by the death of his cousin James, 4th earl, and on hc e 7th of February 1676 he was created marquess of Atholl, ill rl of Tullibardine, viscount of Balquhidder, Lord Murray, di ilvenie and Gask.
St hat is called Atholl brose is a compound, in equal parts, of r~ tisky and honey (or oatmeal), which was first commonly used Zi the district for hoarseness and sore throat.

On March 24, James took the government into his own hands and dissolved the regency, and Atholl and Argyll, to the exclusion of Morton, were made members of the council, while on the 29th Atholl was appointed lord chancellor.
Atholl and Argyll, who were now corresponding with Spain in hopes of assistance from that quarter, then advanced to Stirling with a large force, when a compromise was arranged, the three earls being all included in the government.
While on his way from a banquet held on April 20, 1579 on the occasion of the reconciliation, Atholl was seized with sudden illness, and died on the 25th, not without strong suspicions of poison.

Atholl was an earldom held by the Stewart family until it passed to the Murrays through marriage in the early 1600's, and was raised as a Murray earldom in 1629, a marquessate in 1676 and a duchy in 1703.
Similarly, Atholl is a duke, and apparently played a fairly significant role in Scots history going from a Lord of Parliament in 1600 to a Duke, Earl, and Marquess, and Lord in Scotland in 103 years.
In fairness, it should be noted that Murray, Earl of Tullibardine, Azure three mullets argent and for augmentation a double tressure flory counterflory, (now Duke of Atholl) was not protected in this LoAR, with the note insufficient evidence given to justify protecting these arms.

This was the excuse James needed to destroy the family, and by 1455 they were defeated and all their titles and estates were forfeited to the Crown.
The curtain wall that surrounds this courtyard castle was built by the Comyns, but the eastern side of the castle was completely remodelled in the 16th century by John Stewart, 4th earl of Atholl.
When the fifth earl of Atholl died in 1595 he was survived by four daughters who surrendered their interests in the estates to the Crown.
