This choice was Carnarvon, influenced by the acquisition by Carter on the Luxor antiquities market in 1912 of three fine bracelet plaques of carnelian which appeared to have once adorned the king's mummy.
Carnarvon was stranded in Egypt during this period, and Carter's own energies were diverted more and more with the war effort as a diplomatic courier.
Carnarvon's taste for Egyptian art was developing rapidly, and by the time of his death, what had started off as a somewhat random assortment of purchased and excavated pieces ranked as one of the finest private collections of Egyptian artifacts in the world.

The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and the magnificent treasures within it was made primarily by two Englishmen, the Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter in November 1922.
Lord Carnarvon was born on 26 June 1866, he was a collector of rare books and works of art and became interested in Egyptology when severe injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident led him to spending winters in Egypt to recuperate.
He showed Lord Carnarvon a plan of the Valley and indicated one small area at the foot of the approach to the tomb of Ramesses VI (c1156-1148 BC) that had not yet been examined fully because by doing so they would have prevented visitors from reaching this tomb.

Carnarvon gained a reputation as a courageous and gallant cavalry officer in the south-western campaign of 1643.
Carnarvon resigned his command in protest and joined the King's army at the siege of Gloucester.
He remained with the King during the subsequent pursuit of the Earl of Essex's army and was killed at the battle of Newbury on 20 September 1643.

Carnarvon is a town and a shire about 900 km north of Perth, situated near the mouth of the Gascoyne River.
The Carnarvon area was first explored by George Grey in 1839, the Gascoyne attracting his attention as a possible opening to an inland sea.
As a port, Carnarvon exports large quantities of wool, sheepskins, kangaroo skins and livestock yearly, and is the main shipping point for the large Gascoyne district.

Carnarvon apparently recognised the danger implied by the vision, but played down its importance, saying that he was well aware of the possible dangers of entering the tomb and would continue the work until it was done.
