Gilbert, 2nd Earl, was assassinated by Sir Hugh Campbell of Loudon, Sheriff of Ayr, and supporter of the Douglas Angus faction, from whom Gilbert had unsuccessfully attempted to rescue King James V. At the Reformation the last Abbot of Crossraguel, Quentin Kennedy, was the uncle of the 4th Earl of Cassilis.
From Cassilis, where the Countess had been compelled to watch from a window as her lover was hanged from the Dule Tree, and from Dunrue, in whose Black Vault the Commendator had been roasted, the Kennedy chiefs moved to a new castle at Culzean on the shore of the Firth of Clyde.
Castle Kennedy was built by the Earls of Cassilis in 1607, but passed to the Earls of Stair.

The Kennedies continued to be loyal to the Royal House of Stewart and in 1509, the third Lord Kennedy was created Earl of Cassilis, later dying with many of his clansmen fighting against the English at the Battle of Flodden, when every family in Scotland lost a loved one.
The second Earl was murdered, and the third Earl poisoned in Dieppe where he had been sent to negotiate the marriage of the infant Mary, Queen of Scots to the Dauphin of France.
When the eighth Earl died, the titles passed to his cousin, Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culzean and it was his brother David, 10th Earl of Cassilis, who commissioned Robert Adam to rebuild the house at Culzean as his principal seat.

According to this legend, Lady Jean Hamilton, daughter of the Earl of Haddington, was forced to marry John, Earl of Cassilis, who is described as a grim Covenanter, while her preference was for Sir John Faa, of Dunbar.
Some years later the Countess was married, and after she had a family to the Earl of Cassilis, her husband attended the Assembly of Divines at Westminster.
The lady, it is said, eloped with her former lover, but had not got far away when the Earl returned and, with a body of retainers, started in pursuit, capturing the fugitives, and hanging Sir John and his followers on a tree.

The Earls of Cassilis were the Chieftains of Clan Kennedy and they built this castle to surround and replace an earlier, more warlike building that had been the stronghold of the Kennedy clan.
Near Culzean is where the first Earl of Cassilis is said to have roasted the Abbot of Crossraguel in an attempt to make him surrender abbey lands in 1507.
The earliest official mention of the Kennedys in south Ayrshire (or Carrick, its older name), was the granting of land to John Kennedy of Dunure in 1358.

When Abbot William died in 1547 his nephew Quintin, the son of the second Earl of Cassilis, and brother of the third, became the last ordained Commendator.
In the mid-sixteenth century the Laird of Grimmet helped the joint Cassilis and Bargany factions of the Kennedies to besiege John Cory in Thomaston, because he refused to give up the golden treasure which he had acquired, and John was put in prison for a time.
Both Patrick, Laird of Grimmett and his son were with Cassilis and, to quote, “The young Laird of Grimmat was struken throw the chin and he and his horse bayth struken to the eird (earth)”.

Earl of Dalhousie, Grand Master of Masons in Scotland, sent Brother Warren a Commission, dated May 30, 1769, appointing him Grand Master of Masons in Boston and within one hundred miles of the same.
He received another Commission, 1773, from the Earl of Dumfries, then Grand Master of Scotland.
