In 1069, Chester was the last remaining great town in England to fall to the Conqueror's sword during the final stages of the Harrying of the North in 1069-70, fully three years after the Battle of Hastings.

Much of the property outside Chester was alienated in return for small rent charges, doubtless for reasons of convenience; an inquiry in 1316 found that the improvident policy had been carried out by successive priors in the later 13th Century.
The commissioners who visited Chester in May 1553 to list church goods found nothing worth selling in the hospital and distributed the copes and ornaments to the poor, apart from a silver-gilt chalice, four table-cloths, the service books and a bell in the steeple which were entrusted to the safe-keeping of the chaplain.

It is said that the Master of the ship had told the King that his father had carried Henry's father (William the Conqueror) when he came to fight King Harold, and begged for the honour of ferrying King Henry and his retinue back to England.
The crew were so delighted at this honour that they asked the King to give them three hogsheads of wine- which he did- and consequently they all became hopelessly drunk and unable to control the ship, which foundered on rocks with the loss of about 300 lives- only one man surviving.
