Topic: Earl of Desmond

Gerald FitzGerald, 15th Earl of Desmond - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Desmond estates were held by a doubtful title, and claims on them were made by the Butlers, the hereditary enemies of the Geraldines, for James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde had married Lady Joan Fitzgerald, daughter and heiress-general of James FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Desmond.
The effect of this marriage was a temporary cessation of open hostility between the Desmonds and her son, Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormonde.
In the meanwhile Desmond's cousin, James Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald, caused himself to be acclaimed captain of Desmond in defiance of Philip Sidney, and in the evident expectation of usurping the earldom.

James FITZTHOMAS FITZGERALD (17° E. Desmond)
O'Conor's wife was a sister of James, 16th Earl of Desmond, and with a view to promote his interests, she met the advances of Carew, and his advocate, Miler Magrath, Archbishop of Cashel, and persuaded O'Conor to betray his chief for the sum of £1,000.
Carew was careful to preserve him alive, lest the English adventurers might possibly be baulked of the plunder of his estates by their reverting to an heir, for the confiscation of whose property no legal pretext could be found.
On 22 Jun Desmond wrote an appeal to the Queen to spare his life, but nobly refused to have any share in betraying O'Neil to the Government, which it was hinted, would ensure his restoration to favour.

Fighting in France, Drury was taken prisoner in 1544; then after his release he helped Lord Russell, afterwards earl of Bedford, to quell a rising in Devonshire in 1549, but he did not come to the front until the reign of Elizabeth.
Again in Scotland in January 1570, it is interesting to note that the regent James Stewart, earl of Murray, was proceeding to keep an appointment with Drury in Linlithgow when he was mortally wounded, and it was probably intended to murder the English envoy also.
In 1576 he was sent to Ireland as president of Munster, where his stern rule was very successful, and in 1578 he became lord justice to the Irish council, taking the chief control of affairs after the departure of Sir Henry Sidney.

A Warrior Clan - MacAuliffe of Duhallow
This conflict was of a local nature with a minor branch of the FitzGeralds and seemingly did not affect the good relationship the MacAuliffes had at that time with the Earl of Desmond.
Most of that sweep of country, with the exception of Duhallow, was ruled by the Earl of Desmond, chief of the Fitzgeralds, who had expansionist aims and occasionally came into conflict with the MacCarthys and, because of their strategic position, the MacAuliffes.
Pressure from the English was causing the clan system to fall apart and old loyalties were changing.  The MacDonagh MacCarthys, the MacAuliffes, the O'Callaghans and the O'Keeffes helped Gerald, the last Earl of Desmond, when in 1665, he was defeated by the Butlers at the battle of Affane, in County Waterford.
