The Heir Presumptive is the 10th Earl's son the Hon.

Earl (or Earl's) Shilton, one of the largest villages in the county, consists chiefly of one long street, on the high road from Leicester to Hinckley, 9 miles S.W. by W of the former and 4 N.E. by N of the latter.
Earl Shilton township, which is in Kirby Mallory Civil Parish, Sparkenhoe Hundred, but Hinckley Union and County Court District, was constituted an ecclesiastical district in 1854, and in 1871 contained 2053 persons, living in 477 houses on 920 acres of land.
Quoting the Rev. F.E. Tower's "History of Earl's Shilton "(1894) "This village is called Shilton, otherwise Shulton, otherwise Schelton, otherwise Earles Shilton as written in an apprentice indenture of 1698, and otherwise as Earl's Shilton, as written by Nichols, the County historian (1811).

In 1700, the Earl of Ilchester was a prominent figure in London society and one of daughters was an attractive girl named Lady Susahna.
At a ball she met, and subsequently fell in love with, an Irish Lieutenant named William O'Brien, but the Earl of Ilchester was bitterly opposed to this romance and forbad his daughter to meet O'Brien again.
The house was passed down from generation to generation of the Ilchesters and thus became a dower house for members of the Ilchester family.

Ewers and basins, used for washing hands at table in days before forks were in regular use, were the most ambitious form of Elizabethan table plate and continued to be made through the 17th and 18th century for personal and display use.
Two asymetrical cartouches (enclosures) flank the handle, which is a mermaid with long flowing hair supporting the body of the ewer with her left arm.
The ewer and basin was probably a love gift from Stephen Fox, created 1st Earl of Ilchester (1741), to his young bride, Elizabeth Strangways Horner, on her 18th birthday.

The Earl was beheaded for his Royalist activities during the Civil War and the house was then used as an army headquarters and regularly visited by Oliver Cromwell.
After the war, it was owned by various members of the family, renamed Holland House and passed to the Edwardes family in 1721.

The most complete records of the development of the Golden Retriever are included in the record books that were kept from 1835 until about 1890 by the gamekeepers at the Guisachan (pronounced Gooeesicun) estate of Lord Tweedmouth at Inverness-Shire, Scotland.
These records were released to public notice in Country Life in 1952, when Lord Tweedmouth's great-nephew, the sixth Earl of Ilchester, historian and sportsman, published material that had been left by his ancestor.
