"Earl of Merioneth" is one of the type more powerful locomotives the Ffestiniog Railway is famous for.
Double Fairlies like the "Earl" were an ingeniuos 19th century solution to carry a large boiler, and thereby more motive power, around tight curves.
Each end has its own smokebox and chimney whilest the two fireboxes and the controls are in the middle of one long boiler.

Through the Xmas and New Year break on 2003 a large gang assembled at Boston Lodge and not only built a set of tanks for Merddin but they did a set for Earl of Merioneth as well.
As the job progressed the story was told in daily web updates produced and uploaded from Boston Lodge generating a real sense of anticipation as the gang were up against a tight deadline.
The set for Earl of Merioneth have been painted in primer and will be stored until they are needed for that engine.

According to my researches, there was no restriction on the devolution of the title of Prince through the male line of the royal family before 1917, though HRH went only as far as grandchildren of a sovereign, so he was therefore HH Prince Alasdair of Connaught from birth.
He too should not have been affected by the 1917 Royal Warrant, and was also not affected by the Titles Deprivation Act 1917, under which the elder Ernst August and others were deprived of their British titles, as he was under military age during the First World War.
