The next creation was for Charles Sackville, Lord Buckhurst, son of Frances, daughter of the 1st Earl of Middlesex and sister of the second and third Earls.
He succeeded his father as 6th Earl of Dorset in 1677, and the two earldoms remained united until the death in 1843 of the 5th Duke of Dorset, 11th Earl of Dorset and 6th Earl of Middlesex, when all the titles became extinct.

However in view of the outstanding importance of the 1st Earl of Middlesex's collection, an indication is given here of the framemakers at work for him in the 1630s.
The original fl-and-gold frames have the arms of the Earl of Middlesex at top centre, distinguished by three golden fleur-de-lis arranged vertically; the frames to the right of the fireplace have been somewhat cut about to get them to fit the space, presumably when they were moved here in 1701.

OF the Earl of Dorset the character has been drawn so largely and so elegantly by Prior, to whom he was familiarly known, that nothing can be added by a casual hand; and, as its authour is so generally read, it would be useless officiousness to transcribe it.
I have heard from the late Earl of Orrery, who was likely to have good hereditary intelligence, that Lord Buckhurst had been a week employed upon it, and only retouched or finished it on the memorable evening.
In 1674 the estate of his uncle James Cranfield, Earl of Middlesex, came to him by its owner's death, and the title was conferred on him the year after.

Henry was the eldest son of Edward Hyde, the 1st Earl of Clarendon, and his second wife, Frances, the daughter of Sir Thomas Aylesbury.
The Earl was, at the time, sorely troubled by a marriage project of his eldest son, from the difficulty of raising the sums required for a settlement on the encumbered family estates.
His son, Edward (1661-1724), who succeeded as 3rd Earl of Clarendon was, while Lord Cornbury, MP for Wiltshire (1685-95) and for Christchurch (1695-1701); was Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief of New York and New Jersey (1701-8); was made a Privy Councillor on 13th December 1711, and was envoy extraordinary to Hanover in 1714.

 Knole Kent
The 4th Earl supported the Royal cause during the Civil War and fought at the Battle of Edgehill, while his wife was for a time governess to the Royal children.
She inherited the estates of her father, the Earl of Middlesex, and much of the furniture, tapestries and paintings at Knole were brought from Copt Hall the Cranfield family home in Essex.
The collection of 17th century furniture and textiles at Knole was mostly acquired by the 6th Earl.

Sir Thomas continued to live at Wiston until his death in 1612, supposedly paying the Estate rents to Queen Elizabeth, and her successor, James I. However, the Crown appears to have received nothing from the Estate, and Sir Thomas the younger inherited the problems.
The Estate finally passed into the hands of Lionel Cranfield, the Earl of Middlesex, in 1622.
Wiston House was occupied first by royalist and then parliamentarian soldiers in 1643-44 and the Estate was again sequestrated, this time by Parliament, before being purchased very cheaply in 1649 by Sir John Fagge, a parliamentarian soldier from East Sussex.
