The Minto Cup senior competition was dominated by the New Westminster Salmonbellies, who held the trophy for 21 of the 29 years in which it was contested (the competition was suspended during World War I).
The title Earl of Minto, in the County of Roxburgh, was created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1813 for Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 1st Baron Minto.
Lord Minto holds the subsidiary titles Viscount Melgund, of Melgund in the County of Forfar (1813), in the Peerage of the UK and Baron Minto, of Minto in the County of Roxburgh (1797), in the Peerage of Great Britain, and is a Baronet of Nova Scotia (1700).

Minto’s crude and abortive efforts to prevent the Canadian government from dismissing Hutton for insubordination in January 1900, a viceregal intervention which came close to forcing the resignation of Laurier’s government, alarmed Chamberlain and others in the Colonial Office, who refused to back Minto and promptly arranged for Hutton’s recall.
Minto’s interest in Canadian history led him to support the government’s purchase of the Plains of Abraham at Quebec and, in 1903, to refuse his signature to a Privy Council order authorizing the construction of a road through a section of the walls of the Quebec Citadel.
Minto’s correspondence and papers are preserved in the National Library of Scotland (Edinburgh), Dept. of Manuscripts, mss 12446—587.

Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmond, 1st Earl of Minto, born Edinburgh, Scotland, 23 April 1751 - died Stevenage, England, June 21, 1814, was a Scottish politician and diplomat.
The Earl's second son was Admiral Sir George Elliot (1784-1863), who as a youth was present at the Battle of Cape St Vincent and the Battle of the Nile, and who was Secretary to the Admiralty from 1830 to 1834.
A nephew of the Earl was Sir Charles Elliot (1801-1875), also an admiral, who took a prominent part in the war with China in 1840.

Gilbert John Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 4th Earl of Minto, KG, GCSI, GCMG, GCIE, PC (London July 9, 1845 – March 1, 1914 Minto, Roxburghshire), known between 1859 and 1891 as Viscount Melgund, was a British politician, Governor General of Canada, and Viceroy of India.
In 1901, Lord Minto donated the Minto Cup and appointed trustees to oversee its annual awarding to the champion senior men's lacrosse team of Canada (since 1937 the Cup has been awarded to the junior men's champions).
In 1905, on the resignation of Lord Curzon of Kedleston, Lord Minto was appointed Viceroy and Governor-General of India, retiring in 1910.

It is interesting to note that anoungst the names of the jurors is a John Turnbull of Foulton in the water of Rule and amongst the names of those present and specially summoned to attest is John Turnbull of Bethocrule.
However, in 1451, William, 8th Earl of Douglas was confirmed in the possession of all his lands and included in these confirmatory grants were the lands of Bethocrule, which on the forfeiture of the family of Cumyn, had been gifted to the first Easl Douglas and confirmed to him under the Emerald Charter.
An examination of the arms carried by the Turnbulls at that time shows that those of the Philiphaugh, Minto and Bedrule families were the same and it was usual in those days also for churchmen to carry the arms of their families undifferenced.
