Upon the extinction of the titular dukedom with the death of the sixth Duke, the claim to the earldom of Perth passed to the second Duke of Melfort, another holder of a titular dukedom.
In 1853, the sixth titular Duke of Melfort, George Drummond, was by Act of Parliament deemed Earl of Perth, and the previous attainder was reversed.
The subsidiary titles held by the Earl of Perth are: Viscount Strathallan (created 1686), Lord Drummond of Cargill (1488), Lord Drummond of Stobhall (1605), Lord Maderty (1609) and Lord Drummond of Cromlix (1686).

During the Jacobite uprising, James Drummond 3rd Duke and 6th Earl of Perth, joint commander of the Princes forces alongside Lord George Murray, had commanded a detachment of the rebel army at Preston Pans as a Lieutenant General and was also at the seiges of Carlisle and Stirling.
James married Elizabeth in the town of Houghton-le-Spring on 6 Nov 1749, the Earl was 36 and the new Countess 17.
The pride the Earl had in his son caused him to reveal his story to his family, until that point Elizabeth had never been told of his true identity, he showed her his hidden papers showing his rights to the Drummond estate, these were the letters given to his grandfather by James II at Germain.

The castle was built originally by Sir John Drummond in 1491 and the grounds, famous for its magnificent formal Italianate parterre garden, were laid out by another John Drummond, 2nd Earl of Perth, in the 1630s.
The sundial was carved by John Mylne of Perth, Master Mason to King Charles I. An obelisk dial, such as this, often has a square shaft with four panels,each with sunken dials.
At the base of the sundial is carved the coat of arms of the Earl of Perth, the Drummond family, together with that of his wife, Lady Jean Kerr.
