Portsmouth Herald Local News: Shipyard floats on sub 'capacity' issue
PORTSMOUTH - Hearings in Washington, D.C., this past week made it clear Portsmouth Naval Shipyard supporters must overcome the Navy’s contention there is more capacity to repair and refuel nuclear submarines than required.
Donnell noted the Navy has already scheduled work for Portsmouth for many years in the future, all of which would have to be relocated to the other three shipyards if Portsmouth were closed.
The closure plan calls for the Portsmouth workload to be distributed 45 percent to Norfolk, 45 percent to Puget and 10 percent to Pearl Harbor, a situation, Donnell said, that will create huge dry-dock scheduling problems at all three of those shipyards.
