Before the Norman Conquest the Welsh principality of Powis, comprising the county of Montgomery and part of the counties of Brecknock, Radnor, Shropshire, Merioneth and Denbigh, was subject to the princes of North Wales.
This barony of Powis passed through female inheritance to the family of Cherleton and in 1421 to that of Grey.
The recognized head of the Roman Catholic aristocracy in England, Powis was suspected of complicity in some of the popish plots and was imprisoned in the Tower of London from 1678 to 1684.

Powis Castle was built in the 12th century as a stronghold for the Princes of Powys as a defence against English invaders.
By the time the 2nd Earl of Powis inherited Powis castle, it was in a poor state of repairs due to the previous owner’s mismanagement of funds and the like.
The families’ misfortunes continued well into the 20th century, with the 4th Earl, losing his elder son, Percy in the Battle of the Somme, his wife Violet died in a car crash in 1929 and his surviving son, Mervyn, in a plane crash during active duty in 1942.

Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke (May 31, 1757 - 1834), eldest son of Charles Yorke, Lord Chancellor, by his first wife, Catherine Freman, who was born and educated at Cambridge, England.

On the Earls death., the Manor passed to his nephew Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk, who left it to his fifth son, Sir Robert Howard.
However in 1780 the 2nd Lord Clive (Later Earl of Powis) pulled down the old courthouse and used the material towards the building of what is now the Town Hall and which also houses the Museum.
In 1932 the Earl of Powis gave the Town Hall to Clun and the Parish Council agreed to let the ground floor at a peppercorn rent for a museum, which has continued to grow ever since.

At the time of the trial of the "Newtown Three", Edward Herbert was the M.P. for Ludlow - a seat he was to hold until inheriting the earldom in 1839 - while his father was a Tory peer and opponent of the 1832 Reform Bill in the House of Lords.
He died in 1848 after a tragic shooting accident at Powis Castle, when he was shot by one of his own sons and died a few days later.

Powis Castle, 1mi/2km to the south of Welshpool, has for over 500 years been the seat of the Earls of Powis.
The Long Gallery has fine plaster decoration and pieces of early Georgian furniture, while in the Oak Drawing Room there is a portrait of the first Earl of Powis by Gainsborough.
The terraced gardens were laid out in the early 18th century with balustrades and arcades and lead into the park, which was designed by "Capability" Brown and boasts some magnificent oak-trees.
