John was betrothed to Christiana, daughter of the duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz; but when the princesss sister Charlotte was affianced to George III., reasons of state led to the rupture of the engagement, and he died unmarried on the 19th of March 1804.
Among the unsuccessful claimants to the Roxburghe dukedom was John Bellenden.
The duke of Roxburghe sits in the House of Lords as Earl Innes, a peerage of the United Kingdom, which was conferred in 1837 upon James Henry, the 6th duke (1816-1879).

The Kerr's are entitled with being the Barrons of Roxbrugh, and the Earls of Lothian.
Sir Robert, born in 1570, was created Lord Roxburghe in 1600, and in 1616 was elevated to the Earldom of Roxburghe and appointed Lord Privy Seal in 1637.

The next mention of Duddingston appears when in 1602 the then Commendator of Kelso, William Ker, the eldest son of Robert Ker, Lord Roxburghe (later to be the 1st Earl of Roxburghe), resigned all its temporalities and spiritualities into the hands of his father.
The nephew of the 8th Earl succeeded him and was in 1790 raised to the rank of a Marquess.
His grandson, the 2nd Marquess, was in 1868 raised to the rank of a Duke, and then the Barony of Duddingston continued father to son until the present generation where it is shared by the 5th Duke of Abercorn’s brother and sister, Lord Anthony Hamilton and Lady Moyra Campbell.

The Duke of Roxburghe, heir to the Cessford Kers, is descended from the younger daughter and bears the double-barrelled surname of Innes-Ker, The first Ker to own the former lands of Kelso Abbey was Robert Ker of Cessford who was strongly attached to King James VI and was knighted by him.
Sir William having become Earl of Lothian in 1630, it was inappropriate that the son should be an Earl while his father was only a knight, and Sir Robert was raised to the same dignity in 1633, as Earl of Ancram, on the occasion of Charles' Scottish coronation.
The third Earl, her husband, was one of the leaders of the Covenanting party, but went to London to protest against the "frial" and judicial murder of the King.

Amongst the family documents and letters on view is a facsimile of the Kelso Charter (the original being on loan to the National Library in Edinburgh) granting land at Kelso to Benedictine monks.

Although tradition says that the Kerrs were of Norman descent, from two brothers who settled in Roxburgh in the Scottish Borders in the 14th century, the name existed as early as the 12th century.
Whatever the origins, the families of Kers at Cessford and Ferniehurst became a powerful Border family, having been granted land in Roxburgh by James IV Sir Robert Cessford became Lord Roxburghe in 1600 and in 1616 was elevated to Earl of Roxburghe.
Another Kerr family was established in Lothian and the first Earl of Lothian was created in 1606.

There is no record of the lands near Midlem being given to them but the name Temple Hall commemorates their presence and what now appears on maps as Friarshaw is or used to be known to the locals as Jerusalem.
After the Reformation, the Earl of Roxburghe managed to acquire much of the Kelso Abbey lands including those of Midlem.
It took some seventy years before the feuars of Midlem were confirmed in their rights as "native and kindly tenants and proprietors" in the lands valued at £1055 Scots.
