Henry Howard, earl of Surrey - LoveToKnow 1911
Surrey was knighted early in 1541, and soon after he received the order of the Garter, was made chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, and, in conjunction with his father, grand seneschal of the university of Cambridge.
Surrey had always been an enemy to the Seymours, whom he regarded as upstarts, and when his sister, the duchess of Richmond, seemed disposed to accept a marriage with Sir Thomas Seymour, he wrote to her insinuating that this was a step towards becoming the mistress of Henry VIII.
Surrey had asserted in the presence of a certain George Blage, who was inclined to the reforming movement, that on Henry's death, his father, the duke of Norfolk, as the premier duke in England, had the obvious right of acting as regent to Prince Edward.

§6. Henry Howard, earl of Surrey. VIII. The New English Poetry. Vol. 3. Renascence and Reformation. The Cambridge ...
Henry Howard was the eldest son of lord Thomas Howard, son of Thomas, earl of Surrey and duke of Norfolk, and himself became, by courtesy, earl of Surrey in 1524, on his father’s succeeding to the dukedom.
Surrey was formally married at 16; but the subject of many of his poems was not his wife, but his “lady” in the chivalric sense, the mistress whose “man” he had become by a vow of fealty.
That she was a mere child when Surrey first began to address poems to her confirms the impression received by the candid reader: these poems, in fact, are the result, not of a sincere passion, but of the rules of the game of chivalry as played in its decrepitude and Surrey’s youth.

Earl of Surrey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the failure of the second de Warenne male line in 1347, the earldom passed to Richard FitzAlan, 10th Earl of Arundel, who was a nephew of the last de Warenne earl, although he did not assume the title until after the death of the previous earl's widow in 1351.
The restored earl died in 1415 without male heirs, whereupon the earldom of Surrey became either extinct or abeyant (authorities disagree on this), while the earldom of Arundel passed to cousins who were not descended from the de Warennes.

The Seymours accused Surrey of having secretly sympathized with the rebellion of 1536 (also known as the "Pilgrimage of Grace"), which was provoked by the dissolution of the monasteries in England.

Surrey is also credited with introducing blank verse into English poetry, in his translations of the second and fourth books of Vergil's "Aeneid," and with being the originator of the English sonnet form, which was so masterfully employed by William Shakespeare that it is now widely known as the Shakespearean sonnet

EMLS 6.2 (September, 2000) 19.1-6 Review of Henry Howard, the Poet Earl of Surrey
As Sessions tells the story of Surrey's ancestors, fighting alongside Richard III at Bosworth and later restoring their prominence (and dukedom) at Flodden in 1513, the poet's perilous intimacy with the politics of the realm seems an inherited trait.
These were the means by which Surrey sought to reinforce a new sense of nobility based on Roman models: the lyrics and translations, the architecture and landscape of Surrey House, the portraits by Holbein and others.
Surrey steadfastly maintained his innocence to the last, writing letters and vitriolic psalm paraphrases from the Tower to condemn the moral corruption of his prosecutors.

The Earl of Surrey was the co-founder, along with Sir Thomas Wyatt, of modern English poetry; the whole procession from Spenser and Shakespeare down to Yeats and Eliot starts with Surrey and Wyatt.
Surrey's most notable contributions were the creation of English blank verse and the development of the English sonnet from Italian models; without Surrey we should not have Shakespeare as we know him.
Surrey was also a distinguished soldier and a loving husband, who was executed for treason at age twenty-nine.

It is helpful to keep in mind when reading Wyatt that he was exploring new literary territory and that the accenting of syllables in English has changed since his time.
A friend of Wyatt, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (1517-1547) shares credit for introducing the sonnet to English.
Surrey's work deviates somewhat more both thematically and structurally from Petrarch's conventions and represents a more complete "taming" of the sonnet into the English language.
