In 1826 the name of the works was changed to Rockingham, to honor their patron, the 2nd Earl Fitzwilliam, who was the nephew of the 2nd Marquis of Rockingham.
In 1795 the Leeds and Swinton potteries were worked under the same management, but the distinctive Swinton characteristics of the jug, and the use of a mould from an earlier period, nicely confirms a view that we have long held, namely, that the Swinton Pottery maintained a degree of independence from Leeds.
This jug is the earliest dated piece of Swinton pottery known, and its spout is the "mould from an earlier period" referred to in the above quote.
