Wiltshire is mainly in the diocese of Salisbury.
The archdeaconrics of Wiltshire and Salisbury are mentioned in 1180; in 1291 the former included the deaneries of Avebury, Malmesbury, Marlborough and Cricklade within this county, and the latter the deaneries of Amesbury, Potterne, Wilton, Chalke and Wylye.
Wiltshire at this time was already reckoned among the chief of the clothing counties, the principal centres of the industry being Bradford, Malmesbury, Trowbridge, Devizes and Chippenham.

William le Scrope was created Earl of Wiltshire in 1397.

Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire and 1st Earl of Ormonde (about 1477 - 12 March 1538/9), was a Tudor diplomat and politician and the father of Anne Boleyn, the second Queen of King Henry VIII.
His maternal grandmother Anne Hankford was herself granddaughter to John Montacute, 3rd Earl of Salisbury.
Boleyn was created Viscount Rochford in the Peerage of England in 1525, and Earl of Wiltshire in the Peerage of England and Earl of Ormonde in the Peerage of Ireland on 8 December 1529, probably due to Anne's relationship with the King.

Thomas' marriage to Elizabeth Howard, daughter of the 2nd Duke of Norfolk (at that point the Earl of Surrey), was a brilliant match for him.
While his title of Viscount Rochford predated Henry's romance with Anne, in 1529 he was made Earl of Wiltshire, and recieved the Earldom of Ormonde.
Wiltshire did not try to help his daughter and son when they fell, however.

An earl whose estate is being used for an illegal party has appealed to ravers to leave the ancient forest which he says is being damaged.
It asks: "We hope you share our concerns and we therefore ask that you move from here today, thereby eliminating the risk to the forest that was so present last night and allow the forest to recover".
Wiltshire Police have stopped anyone joining the 800 already at the forest and were meeting to discuss how to break up the gathering.
