John Finch, 6th Earl of Winchilsea died in 1729, without leaving a son to claim the tile and the earldoms of Winchilsea and Nottingham became united under his cousin 2nd Earl of Nottingham who became the Daniel Finch, 7th Earl of Winchilsea.
The 9th earl died in 1826 without issue and his cousin George William Finch-Hatton succeeded to the titles, the additional surname of Hatton having been assumed by his father out of respect for the family of his grandmother Anne Hatton, wife of the 7th Earl and daughter of Christopher Hatton, Viscount Hatton (1632—1706).
The 10th Earl of Winchilsea is famous for his duel with the Duke of Wellington, who was Prime Minister at the time.

Sir Heneage Finch (1628-1689) of Eastwell, Kent, was the 3rd Earl of Winchilsea.
Lord Finch was apointed by his friend earl of Arbermale (General Monk) a Governor of Dover Castle, and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in the July of 1660, also Lord Lieutenant of Kent and afterwards ambassador the Ottoman Empire and served in this capacity from between 1660-69.
The King arrived in Dover with 20 ships and frigates, the Lord General and his life guard was accompanied by the Earl of Winchelsea to the cheer of the crowding locals gathered upon the beach to witness a salute fired from the guns of Dover Castle.

Daniel Finch, 7th Earl of Winchilsea, 2nd Earl of Nottingham (2 July 1647-1 January 1730), son of Heneage Finch, 1st Earl of Nottingham, entered parliament for Lichfield in 1679.
He was one of the privy councillors who in 1685 signed the order for the proclamation of the duke of York, but during the whole of the reign of James II he kept away from the court.
He succeeded to the Earldom of Winchilsea (with which the Nottingham title now became united) on 9 September 1729, and died on the 1 January 1730.

He was the eldest son of Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham and his second wife Anne Hatton, daughter of Christopher Hatton, Viscount Hatton.
Although his father had been a supporter of Walpole, Winchilsea became instead a supporter of Lord Carteret in the so-called "Patriot Opposition".
