EARL MARSHAL - LoveToKnow Article on EARL MARSHAL
The duke is styled earl marshal and hereditary marshal of England, but the double style would seem to be an error, though the Mowbrays, with their double creation (1385, 1386) might have claimed it.
As yet the style of the office was only marshal although the last Bigod holder, being an earl, was sometimes loosely spoken of as the earl marshal.
The marshal appears in the feudal armies to have been in command of the cavalry under the constable, and to have in some measure superseded him as master of the horse in the royal palace.

MARSHAL - LoveToKnow Article on MARSHAL
In England after the Conquest the marshalship was hereditary in the family which derived its surname from the office, and the hereditary title of earl-marshal originated in the marriage of William Marshal with the heiress of the earidom of Pembroke (see EARL MARsHAL).
The marshal, as a military leader, was originally a subordinate officer, the chief command under the king being held by the constable; but in the 12th century, though still nominally second to the constable, the marshal has come to the forefront as commander of the royal forces and a great officer of state.
In England the title of marshal, as applied to an executive officer, survives only in the army, where the provost marshal is chief of the military police in large garrisons and in field forces.
