Earl of Arundel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The oldest extant Earldom (and perhaps the oldest extant title) in the English peerage is the Earldom of Arundel currently held by the Duke of Norfolk, and used as a courtesy title by his heir.
The last FitzAlan holder of the Earldom, Henry FitzAlan, was implicated in the Ridolfi Plot to place Mary I of Scotland, of the House of Stewart, on the English Throne.
In his 1834 book on the Earls of Arundel, M.A. Tierney (Chaplain to the Duke of Norfolk) maintains that the first incarnation of the Earldom was with the House of Montgomery.

Earl of Shrewsbury - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1856 the Earldoms of Shrewsbury and Waterford passed to a branch of the family who also hold the titles of Earl Talbot and Viscount Ingestre, both created 1784, and Baron Talbot of Hensol, created 1733, in the Peerage of Great Britain.
The Earldom of Waterford is sometimes called the "Premier Earldom of Ireland on the Roll", as the oldest Irish Earldom, that of Kildare, has been a subsidiary title of the Duke of Leinster for centuries and the Earl held the oldest Irish earldom held by anyone ranked as an earl.
If Viscount Mountgarret proves his presumed claim to the 1328 Earldom of Ormonde, the Earls of Shrewsbury would lose this distinction, but they derive higher precedence from their English earldom in any event.

The restored earl died in 1415 without male heirs, whereupon the earldom of Surrey became either extinct or abeyant (authorities disagree on this), while the earldom of Arundel passed to cousins who were not descended from the de Warennes.
The earldom of Surrey was subsequently revived for the Thomas Howard, who later became Duke of Norfolk, and it has been held by this family ever since, with some breaks during which their titles were forfeited but later restored.

 The Earldom of Menteith
The earldom of Menteith, which takes its name from the district, is one of the most ancient of the Scottish titles of nobility, and dates from the beginning of the twelfth century, while the oldest English earldom—that of Huntingdon—is three hundred years, and the oldest barony—De Ros—is a hundred and fifty years, later.
This famous earldom has been borne successively by three of the most distinguished families of Scotland—the Red Comyns, the royal Stewarts, and the gallant Grahams—and is associated with a great part of the most important and interesting events in the history of the country.
He was one of the nobles who escorted the young Queen Mary to France in 1550, and was probably selected to be one of her guardians during the voyage in consequence of her having had a temporary refuge in one of the islands on the Lake of Menteith in the immediate vicinity of his residence.

Scottish feudal baronies (feudal barons, feudal baron) including the oath of a knight   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
A charter under the Great Seal generally erected the lands into an earldom or barony and then granted that earldom or barony to an individual (the grantee) using the words (in the case of a barony) 'the lands and barony of x' to be held of the King 'in free barony' ('in liberam baroniam').
Earldoms, lordships and baronies were therefore all held 'by barony' (Latin 'per baroniam') and their holders all sat in Parliament by virtue of being barons.
Earldoms, for instance, degenerated from a situation where they had been only seven in number, corresponding to the ancient kingdoms, and where the earl was effectively a prince in rank, to a situation where there were literally dozens of the things and many of these were earldoms 'of' places of no significance whatsoever e.g.
