Gerald Arthur James Balfour, the son of the 3rd Earl of Balfour, was born on December 23 1925.
The earldom was created in 1922 for the former Tory Prime Minister Arthur Balfour, Gerald's great-uncle.
Arthur Balfour had succeeded his own uncle, the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, in the premiership in 1902 and held it till 1905.
