The college course listing did not make clear that this is an advanced course which requires the permission of the instructor for admission.
I have in mind rather the image of the Oxford or Cambridge undergraduate who visits his (or, nowadays, her) don in chambers, and reads the don the latest draft of a paper, while the don listens and puffs on his (or, nowadays, her) pipe.
Being a Quaker college, we should do the tutorials without the tobacco, but we should note that the pipe served an important function --it gave the listener something to mess around with to slow down the conversation and thus to allow a lot of time for thinking.

I got my Alumni magazine yesterday and saw that Earlham is now using Moodle as their Course Management System.
Having gone to Earlham and worked for years at MIT, I don't think the difference is so profound that the schools wouldn't use the same software.
If I were running Academic Computing at a small college like Earlham I'd make the same decision - use the skills available in house to work with a PHP environment they can easily host locally.
