Early Newspapers: Instruments in the Spread of Print Culture.
This great increase in the number of newspapers cannot be explained by population growth alone; rather it was the result of a shift from a predominantly oral culture to one which relied on print for information.
Newspapers were not only a result of this change but also central in effecting the shift.
From the emergence of independent newspapers in 1820 the ubiquitous “Provincial Parliament” column furnished readers with the daily proceedings and debates in Parliament and with highlights or the entire text of the laws passed by their government.

The function of the Association in the early days was chiefly for the purpose of presenting the views of the radio station operators to the various radio commissions which commenced with the Aird Commission in 1929 and the Association operated without a salaried executive or office accommodation.
Illustrating the early record of radio broadcasting in Canada is the reproduction of an article from the Montreal Daily Star, of Friday, May 21st, 1920, describing a broadcast, conducted the previous evening between the Canadian Marconi Company's plant in Montreal and the Chateau Laurier, Ottawa.
The Canadian Marconi experimental broadcasting activities took place during the summer of 1919, when they put into operation the first broadcast transmitter ever to be used in the Dominion of Canada.

Although two newspapers have indeed stopped publishing as a direct consequence of the cuts (Kainai News died in Alberta and Micmac News went ``dormant'' in Nova Scotia), the rest of the Aboriginal press still reports and publishes, albeit material somewhat different from the NCP time and in conditions which are far from ideal.
Then, early in 1992, the government of the NWT lent its support to a three-month program which made the paper consider bilingualism as its only chance of survival.
A careful analysis of the evolution of both newspapers content over time should be made to allow a meaningful appreciation of their evolution during that 1990-92 transition.

Canadian Studies: A Guide to the Sources
Bruce Hutchison, a prominent newspaper editor and author, once described Canada as "The Unknown Country." To a large extent, Canada, with its complex weave of languages, cultures and regions, is a geopolitical conundrum.
The first undergraduate Canadian Studies programme was established at Mount Allison University in 1969 with an endowment from Edgar and Dorothy Davidson of Montreal; the first director was George F.G. Stanley (1907-2002), a distinguished historian and author, and designer of the country's maple leaf flag.
However, these forces are also serving to keep Canadian Studies a vibrant discipline, both at home and abroad, and are providing Canadian writers, artists, academics, journalists, and foreign observers with abundant opportunities for discourse on the evolving nature of this still enigmatic northern land.
