Early United States commemorative coins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Early period of Commemorative Coins of the United States of America traditionally begins with the 1892 Colombian Half dollar and extends through the 1954 Booker T. Washington issue.
The profits from the sale of commemorative coins was often used to fund a specific project.
Commemorative coins were a money raising mechanism that was an alternative to raising taxes.

Commemorative stamps are usually used alongside ordinary or regular-issue stamps of the time, although in some cases their use has been obligatory.
Commemoratives followed in 1891 for Hong Kong and Romania, then in 1892 and 1893 a half-dozen nations of America issued commemoratives for the 400th anniversary of the discovery by Christopher Columbus.
The appearance of commemoratives caused a backlash among some stamp collectors, who balked at the prospect of laying out ever-larger sums to acquire the stamps of the world, and they formed the Society for the Suppression of Speculative Stamps around 1894 to fllist what they deemed to be excessive stamps.

 Coin Values
Commemorative coins are celebratory pieces that are legal tender, but are normally not intended to be used in commerce.
Early commemorative coin values have crept up by 10 to 20 percent, and even more, in recent months, while modern commemoratives have fallen around $5 to $10 each, due to an increasing supply of high-grade coins.
Early commemorative gold dollars, gold $2.50 quarter eagles and the round and octagonal gold $50 pieces are also popular in high grades.

 Reference.com/Encyclopedia/United States Commemorative Coin
Commemorative coinage of the United States consists of coins that have been minted to commemorate a particular event, person or organization.
Most students of US commemorative coinage acknowledge the break between 1954 and 1982 by classifying those minted from 1892-1954 as Early Commemoratives, and those minted since 1982 as Modern Commemoratives.
In 1932, the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington, the mint produced a circulating commemorative, the Washington Quarter.

U.S. Commemoratives Offer History and Romance
Personally, among commemorative silver coins I like the early issues-the Columbian half dollars of 1892 and 1893, the Isabella quarter of the latter date, and the 1900 Lafayette dollar-four coins which on their own constitute a complete commemorative collection of the era.
This is a reflection that the designs of commemorative coins have sparked a wide diversity of opinion ever since the first half dollars of this genre were issued in 1892.
Among commemorative coins nearly all designs of the early 1892-1954 period were criticized in their time.

Although it released several values of the Fourth Bureau Issue of definitive stamps, just three commemoratives was a very small number, even by the standards of that day.
The new 2¢ commemorative, however, was only a small part of an extended four-day Yorktown Sesquicentennial celebration, which began on Oct. 16 and lasting through Oct. 19.
Regrettably, the release of a special commemorative stamp was not mentioned in the brochure.

Mintage records in some cases may be inaccurate, as many of the early pieces were struck later than the dates shown on the coins.

Sometimes in the life of a nation, a place (or person, anniversary or event) is of such significance that people feel it must be honored with the issuance of a special coin as a form of tribute.
While some like the Columbian Half Dollar circulated in large quantities for several years, they were not made to be used as much as for a keepsake to recognize an event or accomplishment.
As each is distinctive and a work of art (sometimes with very stiff competition for acceptance of a particular artists design) they are among the most beautiful of United States coins and pleasing to own if you select one that appeals to you or complete an entire set.
