Earplug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An earplug is a protective device that is meant to be inserted in the ear canal to protect the wearer's hearing from loud noises or the intrusion of water, foreign bodies, dust or excessive wind.
Earplugs are rated with "Noise Reduction Ratings" or NRRs (Sound Reduction Ratings, or SNR, in the European Union), which provide a guide to the noise protection, in decibels, afforded by the device.
Most earplugs are made of memory foam that is typically rolled into a tightly compressed cylinder (without creases) by the wearer's fingers and then inserted in the earcanal.

This was very comfortable, but with the earplugs in place the CD player could not produce enough volume to overcome the attenuation of the ear plugs to be heard over the still present (but reduced) road noise.
P.S. I have learned over the years it is possible to reuse disposable earplugs many times simply by washing them in the washing machine and throwing them in the drier, or using a little warm water and hand soap, followed by thorough rinsing and air drying...

Earplugs From Lucy Dell - webBikeWorld
Earplugs are available in a corresponding variety of all sorts of different shapes and sizes, and they are manufactured using various types of materials to control noise, including down, plastic, rubber and silicone.
Lucy Dell Earplugs suggests that an earplug with a high noise reduction rating (NRR) can be worse than an earplug that fits correctly but has a lower NRR, so this is a good reason to purchase a Testpack and sample them all.
Earplugs can either be too big or too small, so it's a good idea to make sure the earplug is big enough so that it doesn't disappear into your ear canal.

Inserts or earplugs are inserted directly into the ear canal, creating a barrier between the user's internal ear and the outside ambient noise environment.
The efficiency of the barrier depends on the interface of the earplug to the ear canal, or the cushion to the head, as well as the attenuation characteristic of the earplug, canal cap, or earcup.

I confess I was initially skeptical, because I knew that using a practice mute similarly cuts out the resonating harmonics (and a few decibels) of a bowed string, in effect dulling the sound.
I now use my earplug in the left ear whenever I practice alone, and I find that the subtleties of my tone and intonation are much more easily navigated when I then perform or rehearse in a group without the plug.
I have found, in contrast, that the disadvantage of the practice mute is the fact that it is dampening the instrument itself, somewhat changing the feel of it and encouraging misconceptions in terms of accuracy.

A Proposed Programming Language for Working with Rhythm
Since EARPLUG is meant to run on a wide variety of platforms I would prefer to allow a wide variety of latencies and build into the system a mechanism for working with whatever time quantization the hardware is able to provide.
This simply means that the operating system should ensure that (a) all processing is completed (all threads are waiting) before advancing an input or output stream and that (b) the computation is known to be off-line so that no attempt is made by the threads to gauge world time.
In EARPLUG this would allow a programmer to take, for example, RealAudio from the Internet as a stream, filter it appropriately using the DSP toolkit, and then cast it into a stream that can be used by EARPLUG.
