Topic: Earth (Foundation universe)

  Biblical Conception of the Universe
To the ancient Hebrews the earth was the centre of the universe.
The modern concept of an infinite or open-ended universe was not known in the OT; on the contrary, heaven and earth were though to be sealed together at the rim of the hoirzon to prevent the influx of the cosmic waters (Stadelmann 1970:43).
The earth was regarded as a vast plain, occupied partly by the sea, partly by continents studded with mountains, furrowed by rivers, and dotted with lakes.

Earth Society Foundation - Margaret Mead
EARTH DAY draws on astronomical phenomena in a new way — which is also the most ancient way — using the vernal Equinox, the time when the Sun crosses the equator making night and day of equal length in all parts of the Earth.
EARTH DAY celebrates the interdependence within the natural world of all living things, humanity's utter dependence upon Earth, man's only home, and in turn the vulnerability of this Earth of ours to the ravages of irresponsible technological exploitation.
EARTH DAY uses one of humanity's great discoveries, the discovery of anniversaries by which, throughout time, human beings have kept their sorrows and their joys, their victories, their revelations and their obligations alive, for re-celebration and re-dedication another year, another decade, another century, another aeon.

 Structure of the Universe
The infinite universe was said to be the source of an infinity of worlds, of which ours was but one, that separated off and gathered its parts together by their rotary motion.
The central fire was not the Sun, although the Earth was certainly of the character of a planet to it.
Persuasive observational evidence that the universe is indeed expanding and changing in time was found by Hubble (1889-1953) in 1929 while employing the technique known as Doppler shift for measuring the red shift of colors in the spectrum of nebulae.

Earth Literacy as a field of study, “explores the contemporary, scientific story of the origin, nature and function of the Universe from its beginning, through its galactic phase, its supernova events, the shaping of the solar system, Earth, life, human life and self-reflective consciousness as a single, unbroken series of events.” Thomas Berry
"Earth Literacy as a field of study, reveals that the bio-spiritual dimension of the Universe was present from the beginning and is intimately related to the emergence of human consciousness.
Earth Literacy, as a movement, is capable of initiating profound social change, by inspiring the depths of human awe, love and feelings needed to transform our human patterns of destruction into mutually enhancing relationships with Earth’s community of life.

Foundation and Earth takes us on a tour of seven different planets and the different habitations of each.
Actually, even though there are these ambiguities on the universe here and there, Asimov does wrap up the Foundation series somewhat nicely (although you may not like it as it differs from the original Foundation series), as well as wrapping up his grouping of all of his series into one.

 Age of the Universe
Concerning our question about the age of the universe, it is interesting to note that early on many cultures considered the earth to have existed first leading to the rest of the universe.
We learned enough to notice that the entire collection of stars and galaxies we call the universe is expanding indicating that everything must have been together at a common place in space and time marking the beginning-the creation.
If we could know how big the universe is we would know how long it has been expanding, thus how old it is. Finally we were able, with credible evidences from many directions, to give an estimate of the age of the universe: something like 12 to 20 billion years.
