EarthBound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EarthBound breaks the escapist, fantasy-oriented tendencies and themes of most RPGs by placing the action in a modern day world, much like Shin Megami Tensei but without the dark overtones of that series.
One of the most unusual elements of EarthBound may be the fourth-wall-breaking inclusion of the player as an active participant within the story itself, which is in great contrast to the plots of other console RPGs that usually never reference the player behind the controller, let alone incorporate him or her into the story.
EarthBound follows the same basic plot as its predecessor, but Giygas (or Gyiyg) is the only returning character.

EarthBound 64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Earthbound 64 (Japanese: Mother 3) was a cancelled game that was going to be released for the Nintendo 64 and then on the Nintendo 64DD.
However, pre-release information from Earthbound 64 involved a cowboy as one of the main characters, and pre-release screenshots of the GBA Mother 3 included the protagonistic cowboy, Flint and introduced many of the same characters that were planned to appear in the N64 version.
It appears that Mother 3 for GBA is very heavily based upon EarthBound 64 for the Nintendo 64DD, although until the release of the game, this remains uncertain.

 IGN: Earthbound 64 Cancelled
Earthbound 64 was under development since the early days of Nintendo 64 and was scheduled to release in Japan later this year.
However, it should be noted that Itoi had expressed frustrations with the project previously in several interviews with the Japanese press, explaining that the jump from 2D to 3D really put the development team at an unexpected disadvantage and that they had been scrambling to deal with it ever since.
Earthbound 64 has been removed from Nintendo's Japanese products list for Nintendo 64 and, according to Itoi, is not scheduled for release on the company's next-generation console either.

IGN: State of the RPG: GameCube
By the time Nintendo 64 reached the middle of its five-year life cycle, Square's Final Fantasy 7 had sold 2.7 million units and Final Fantasy 8 another 2.0 million on PlayStation in the US alone.
The team decided to switch Earthbound 64 over to Nintendo 64 and later release a 64DD expansion dubbed simply "Mother 3.5." In 2000, the game was cancelled altogether due to more development issues.
As a result, Nintendo 64 was more or less a wasteland for the genre, with fewer than five RPGs released for the system in America during its entire life cycle.

Earthbound Zero is the name given to the ROM version of the unreleased NES game called Earthbound.
Released in Japan as Mother(1) the first game in the Mother/EB series never saw release in North America, but the prototype that Nintendo was working on, eventually found its way in to the hands of ROM dumpers and to avoid confusion with Earthbound (SNES) they added the "Zero" to the ROMs name.
