EarthBound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EarthBound breaks the escapist, fantasy-oriented tendencies and themes of most RPGs by placing the action in a modern day world, much like Shin Megami Tensei but without the dark overtones of that series.
One of the most unusual elements of EarthBound may be the fourth-wall-breaking inclusion of the player as an active participant within the story itself, which is in great contrast to the plots of other console RPGs that usually never reference the player behind the controller, let alone incorporate him or her into the story.
EarthBound follows the same basic plot as its predecessor, but Giygas ("Gyiyg" in the Japanese version) is the only returning character.

 STARMEN.NET - EarthBound : Starmen.Net : Mother/EarthBound 0
EarthBound 0 is an original RPG that takes place in rural America in the 1980's.
EarthBound 0 is known as Mother in Japan, where it was released in the late 1980's for the Nintendo Famicom system.
The first three resemble characters in EarthBound for the SNES, but there doesn't seem to be any specific connection between the plot of the two games.

Mother (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original plan was to release the game in the USA, but Nintendo of America decided to put the game on hold, and it has never been released since.
In recent years, one of the auctioned beta cartridges of the game was made into a ROM and circulated for download on the Internet.
To avoid confusion, the game was dubbed Earth Bound Zero by fan translation group Neo Demiforce, as Nintendo had since released the SNES sequel to Mother (Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back!

RPG Classics Capsule Reviews - Earthbound Zero
Earthbound was never known for its plot - rather, its appeal lay in the deadpan humour, the LSD-inspired battles, the hilarious items and the satire of America.
Earthbound Zero has them in spades as well; however, the graphics seem more bland (though the ones in the later game aren't hugely better, the older one lacks the freaky backgrounds in battles), and the sound is best left out of the discussion.
But if you play Earthbound Zero, you'll have to put up with NES-era difficulty, game speed and play control, and that really is what harms the game - it shouldn't take as long as it does to get from your house to the first town, dammit.

Earthbound, or Mother 2 as it is known in Japan, was like no other game before it, except maybe its prequel, Mother, which had not sen a release outside of Japan.
While in most RPGs the non-playable characters converse in regular prose, in Earthbound much of their dialogue is laced with humor.
While Earthbound is regarded as one of the greatest RPGs by those who have given it a chance and played through it, the majority of the gaming public doesn't regard it as such.

However, EarthBound was not a localization of the first Mother title, but was instead a translation of Mother 2.
The EarthBound prototype expands this ending significantly by adding in character and subplot resolutions, a retrospective on every character that appeared in the game, and even an exclusive remix of a few different songs that plays during the credits.
And yet, despite all the documented facts concerning the differences between the prototype EarthBound, the original Japanese Mother, and the new version of Mother that was included in the GBA Mother 1+2 collection, some people still do not believe that there is enough evidence to show that the EarthBound prototype is legitimate.

Released in Japan as Mother(1) the first game in the Mother/EB series never saw release in North America, but the prototype that Nintendo was working on, eventually found its way in to the hands of ROM dumpers and to avoid confusion with Earthbound (SNES) they added the "Zero" to the ROMs name.

There is no US release of Mother, the prequel to the super smash hit EarthBound on SNES, (well, to us fans maybe not to Nintendo.) If you've played EarthBound for SNES, the game that followed EB Zero, than you know the game is humorous, unique and rich in plot.
EB Zero is exactly the same, and you may find that some of the plot explains a lot in the SNES game.
