Earthquakes result from rapid movement of faults that transmit seismic waves through the earth, setting its surface in motion.
A good way to imagine an earthquake is to think of the ground as a pond, an earthquake is like a stone that sets the surface in motion creating a series of circular waves, which collide with one another.
During an earthquake, the ground vibrates in a similarly complex manner, as waves of different frequencies and amplitude interact with one another.

IZMIT EARTHQUAKE in Turkey is part of a larger pattern of ruptures on the North Anatolian fault, beginning with a 1939 earthquake and leading to raised (red) or lowered (purple) levels of stresses along the fault, as measured by an index called the Coulomb failure stress (a large earthquake releases about 100 bars of stress).
The Landers earthquake also increased the stress in a zone extending northeastward to the Mojave Desert--an area struck by the October 16 magnitude 7.1 earthquake.
