The airline was established in January 1977 after the demise of East African Airways (as a consequence of the breakup of the East African Community).

At a meeting of the East African Community, it was decided that the airline’s chairman should be from Tanzania (newly renamed after the merger of Tanganyika and Zanzibar), the general manager would be Ugandan and his assistant would be Kenyan.
