Exports from East Azarbaijan province in the first nine months of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2006) reached 510,000 tons valued at dlrs 375 million, showing a 32-percent increase compared to the figure for the same period last year, Public Relations Office of East Azarbaijan Province Customs Administration reported here on Monday.
In the same period, some 343,000 tons of goods worth dlrs 482 million were imported via customs offices in the East Azarbaijan province indicating eight and nine percent growth in weight and value, respectively.
The Public Relations Department of East Azarbaijan Customs Office announced the income earned by the office during March-December stood at 553 billion rials showing an 18-percent increase compared to the amount for the same time last year.

TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Head of East Azarbaijan province Commerce Department, Sadeq Najafi, said on Sunday that 41% of the world's $2.2 billion carpet trade is controlled by Iran, adding that his province accounts for 35 percent of the carpets annually exported by Iran.
He also pointed out that over 66 million dollars worth of hand-woven carpets were exported from the East Azerbaijan province during the last 6 months.
The official stated that the products of no country can compete with the hand-woven carpets of his province, reminding that East Azarbaijan has ranked the first in carpet design and quality in the world.

Speaking in a meeting with governor-general of the Iranian province of East Azarbaijan, Abbas Ali Hasanev also stated that his country is also keen on launching direct flights between the Azeri capital city of Baku and Iran's northwestern city of Tabriz as well as importing wheat from East Azarbaijan.
Stressing the need for deepening of the two countries' relations, he reminded that the two countries' officials are decisive to expand the existing ties despite all the efforts some movements and groups make to impair Tehran-Baku relations.

TEHRAN, July 21--The historical city of Ejdeha Dashi in East Azarbaijan province, which dates back to the first millennium BC, is threatened by operations to establish a gas pipeline to transfer gas from Iran to the Republic of Armenia, reported CHN.
The route suggested by ICHTO is situated two kilometers east of Ejdeha Dashi historical city and in addition to saving this historical site, it would have prevented damages to the ecosystem of the area as well.
He also mentioned that despite regulations passed by the government for preserving historical sites, most of the destructions in East Azarbaijan province are caused by the activities of the state organizations.
