East Baton Rouge Parish has both the highest high school graduation rate, at 82.2%, and the highest percentage of residents holding at least a Bachelor's degree, 33.3%, in the state of Louisiana [2].

Historically Baton Rouge has been second largest city in Louisiana behind New Orleans, but as of mid-2005, the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Katrina have, at least temporarily, reduced the population of New Orleans such that Baton Rouge is currently the largest city in Louisiana.
Planters in the Baton Rouge area were unusually prosperous, thanks both to the fertile soil and to the brisk illegal trade with neighboring Spanish Louisiana, and the fort became the center of an expanding agricultural community, though the town had not yet evolved.
In 1825, Baton Rouge was visited by the Marquis de Lafayette as part of his triumphal tour of the United States, and he was the guest of honor at a town ball and banquet.

Chene Vert is a typical two-story Creole plantation house of the 1770s to the 1830s.
It was discovered in a badly deteriorated condition and relocated some 80 miles to Baton Rouge where it was restored and adapted for contemporary living by F. Wayne Stromeyer.
A felicitous addition to the historic structures in East Baton Rouge Parish in Louisiana is Chene Vert, a plantation house originally situated some eighty miles west in Saint Landry Parish, where it had been the center of a sugar and cotton plantation.
