Brigadier Gautam Banerjee, the commandant of the Bengal Sappers’ Centre at Roorkee, was invited to the British High Commissioner’s residence to have tea with the Prince of Wales.
In the atmosphere of counter-insurgency, the Bengal Sappers are active in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast, supporting army units, defusing improvised explosive devices and monitoring the Line of Control.
The regimental centre is at Roorkee in Uttaranchal.

New infantry regiments, unlike those of the 1922 reorganisation, were unnumbered, and the old regiments dropped their numbers in 1945 (except for the Punjab regiments since there were several whose titles would be identical without the numbers).
Of the new regiments, the Sikh Light Infantry was considered to be a revival of the Sikh Pioneers disbanded in 1933, and it took precedence within the infantry accordingly.

Graduating from the Pakistan Military Academy in 1955 in the top ten percent of his class, Zia went to East Pakistan on a short visit and was amazed by the negative attitude of the Bengali middle class towards the military, which consumed a large chunk of the country's resources.
In 1969, he joined the 2nd East Bengal Regiment as its second-in-command at Joydevpur, then in East Pakistan.After this, he was sent to West Germany for higher training.
East Bengal Regiment under Major Zia captured one radio broadcast centre in Kalurghat, Chittagong (Shadin Bangla Betar Kendro) and Major Zia read the independence declaration on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which officially started the Liberation War.

Regarding the state of affairs in 2nd East Bengal, the incident of 19th March 1971 at Joydebpur is known to all, particularly to those people who were then ordinarily residing in Dhaka?
I consider that the incident was a test case for the Pakistani authorities in assessing the so-called loyalty of the Bengali troops.
It may be mentioned that 2nd East Bengal under Lieutenant Colonel Masud, was then at Joydebpur under the operational command of 57 Brigade under Brig Arbab in Dhaka.
