East Bergholt and Hadleigh are the largest villages in the Stour Valley, a region historically known for its manufacture of linens.

John Constable was born in East Bergholt in Suffolk on 11 June 1776, the fourth of his parents' six children.
His father Golding was a prosperous corn merchant who owned wind-and water-mills in East Bergholt and nearby Dedham, together with land in the village and his own small ship, The Telegraph, which he moored at Mistley on the Stour estuary and used to transport corn to London.
More significantly, she was the granddaughter of Dr. Rhudde, rector of East Bergholt and a formidable old man, who was believed by his family to be very rich.

 John Constable: The Early Years (1776 - 1819)
On June 11, 1776, at East Bergholt in Suffolk, John Constable was born the second son to Golding and Ann Constable.
John Constable first attended a boarding school fifteen miles from East Bergholt when he was seven-years-old, then moved to a school in Lavenham, and finally ended up at Dedham, where he stayed until he was seventeen-years-old.
I shall return to Bergholt, where I shall endeavor to get a pure and unaffected manner of representing the scenes that may employ me. There is little or nothing in the Exhibition worth looking up to.

The campaign, “Get On Board” (see this poster for an explaination), seems to have worked, as there is now significant interest in it (250 homes) to warrent its installation.
That’s what the “posties” at East Bergholt are faced with at the moment, and so I’m struggling to see how the Royal Mail’s new 5-day week is of any real benefit to the regular postman — and anything but a lesser service to the customer.
Although ‘Bergholt are suffering more than I’m sure most delivery offices are (including Dedham, where I’m based), there are still issues surrounding the new 5-day week.
