The South Coast has other attractions for birders these include the Diani Forest, a 12km strip of deciduous coral rag which is home to the Little Yellow Flycatcher, Uluguru Violet-backed Sunbird, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Fischer's Turaco, Spotted Ground Thrush and Plain-backed Sunbird.

A study of the East Coast Akalat, Sheppardia gunningi sokokensis, found the species to be more abundant than previously thought, with an estimated 7,500 to 9,000 territories in the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest alone.
The Akalat prefers areas where the undergrowth is partially open with large amounts of dead wood, foraging near the ground.

When I checked the entry of the Lowland Akalat in Clements I found a personally written addition of a new subspecies (Sheppardia cyornithopsis pallidigularis), described either after the publication of Clements or after it's cut-off date.
The on-line update does include new subspecies Sheppardia gunningi alticola to East Coast Akalat and new species Rubeho Akalat (Sheppardia aurantiithorax).
The latter work maintained that it is not enough genetically dissimilar from the pre-existing nominate race of Equatorial Akalat.

In both forests East Coast Akalat was easy to find, but otherwise both forests were rather lifeless.
East Coast Akalat was again seen very well, but the only other birds we noted were Green-backed Woodpecker, Black Cuckoo-Shrike, Chinspot Batis and Green-backed Camaroptera.
Bronze-winged Courser, Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo, Boehm's Bee-eater, Brown-breasted Barbet, Souza's Shrike, East Coast Akalat, White-winged Apalis, Brown Warbler, Green-backed Twinspot and Striped Pipit, lifers all of course.

 Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, Watamu on the Indian Ocean - Best of Kenya
The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is East Africa's largest surviving, dry coastal forest, situated only 7km inland from Watamu and 18km southwest from Malindi on the Kenya Coast.
Arabuko is the global stronghold for one Globally Endangered species, the Spotted Ground Thrush, and five Globally Threatened species of birds, the Sokoke Scops Owl, Sokoke Pipit, East Coast Akalat, Amani Sunbird, and the Clarke's Weaver, all of which are endemic to the area.
