The ECHL is a professional hockey minor league based in the United States and Canada, generally regarded as being a tier below the American Hockey League.
Since that time, the League has met with great success, reaching its largest size in 2003 of 31 teams before being reduced to 28 teams for the 2004 season.
All of the teams, except for the Greensboro Generals and the Roanoke Express, which were terminated by the ECHL, and the teams which have relocated, are considered to have suspended operations and the franchises placed for sale.

One can trace the lineage of the ECHL back to the old days of the Eastern Hockey League which served as the primary AA league from the end of World War II into the 1970's.
In more recent times, the ECHL was created in 1988 and originally consisted of teams in Roanoke, Knoxville, Winston-Salem, Johnstown, and Erie.
Only Roanoke and Johnstown have managed to stay in the league, but entering its twelfth season the league has expanded to 27 teams ranging from Peoria to Lafayette to Fort Myers to Trenton.
