Since hip-hop emerged out of New York City, for a time all rap music was 'East Coast rap.' By 1979, hip-hop parties were being exposed to communities outside the South Bronx--where the music had all started--and this eventually led to the art form being recorded and released on vinyl.
Run DMC was the first rap group to legitimize the genre by gaining acceptance from mainstream media.
East Coast rap was individualized as a genre after artists from other parts of the United States (chiefly the West Coast) emerged with different styles of hip-hop.

 Glenn Beck.Com - Gary's Music Review
Rap is an integral part of this subculture that did not evolve or exist in isolation from its other major components.
Although the sound of East Coast rap wasn't completely uniform, from the mid- to late '80s it tended to gravitate to more aggressive beats and sample collages, and many MCs prided themselves on their technical dexterity in crafting lyrics.
The rise of Southern rap further ensured that East Coast rap could no longer dominate as it once had, but the '90s were hardly a wash for the region.

East Coast Rap Community on IMEEM
Early East Coast rap was actually really silly, goofy stuff--with rarely any swearing, if any.
Even Public Enemy, the first militant, politicised rap group that advocated social change and awareness infused with Black Panther-like aggression, kept things on an even keel with the comic relief antics of Chuck D's sidekick, Flava Flav.
All this changed, however, when rap's influence was taken up by a second generation of artists.......who were not from the east coast, and were not amused at all about East Coast Rap's toothless smirk.

On the other hand, I remember what east coast rap was like in the early nineties, and for the most part, it really sucked.
That was when east coast rappers like Kid n' Play and Big Daddy Kane danced about in silly sequined outfits and tall high top fade hairstyles, and produced crappy R&B tinged dance tunes.
At the same time, the "gangsta" style of rap was emerging on the west coast, pioneered by artists such as Ice-T and N.W.A. (for those of you who don't know, the original line-up of N.W.A. included Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E).

Early rap records, commonly called "old school," were made by DJs scratching records and playing drum loops, with MCs rapping over the resulting rhythms.
As the genre progressed, hard-rock guitars and hard-hitting beats were introduced by Run-D.M.C., the first hardcore rap group, and the scratching techniques were replaced by sampling.
