East Garo Hills is an administrative district in the state of Meghalaya in India.
The East Garo Hills district was formed in 1976, after the erstwhile Garo Hills district of Meghalaya was re-organised with a view to bring the administration closer to the people.
The legendary Garo leader Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma was felled by the British, in skirmish, at Chisobibra, quite close to this place, on 12th December 1837.

The greater part of Garo Hills range in height from 450 m to 600 m and drop steeply to the Brahmaputra valley on the north and to the plains of Bangladesh on the south.
In the Garo Hills, the Manda, the Damring and the Janjiram flow towards the north while the Ringge and the Ganol flow in the westerly direction.
In the Khasi and Jaintia hills, the rivers that flow in a northerly direction include the Khri, the Umtrew, the Umiam, the Umkhem besides the Kupli on the border between Jainita Hills and North Cachar Hills.

The victims included senior civil and police officials who were injured in stone-throwing, when a student demonstration turned violent in two disrticts of Meghalaya's Garo Hills region on Friday, official sources said in Shillong.
Four, including an elderly person, were killed in West Garo hills district headquarters town of Tura, about 300 kilometres from Shillong, where 64, including 36 police and security force personnel and 28 civilians were injured, they said.
Another five were killed, when the police and CRPF also fired in the adjoining East Garo hills district headquarters town of William nagar, about 350 kilometres from Shillong, they said. 25 others, including eight security personnel and state officials and 17 civilians, were injured in William nagar.
