The effects of the rural recession have had a harsh impact on East Gippsland; the lack of stability and diversity of indusry in the various communities coupled with their comparatively small size will result in a slow recovery.
With almost 90% of all dwellings in the region being separate houses, East Gippsland is similar to the rest of country Victoria.
The situation in the Gippsland Lakes District is showing the highest indicators of this 'expressed' housing need and is reinforced further by the high usage of the Bond Scheme, the prevalence of caravans as dwellings, an escalating demand for emergency relief assistance, crisis and family counselling and financial counselling.

The area is known as the 'Riviera' due to its mild climate and it is in the centre of the Gippsland Lakes, an internationally known waterway famous for its natural attributes and facilities for recreational use.
Being the only Brass Band in the Shire of East Gippsland it is heavily committed to community events, especially in the summer months.
The band also travels as far as Omeo which is about one and a half hours' drive away (but still within the East Gippsland Shire) to perform at engagements.

 HOWITT BICYCLE
The Howitt Bicycle Trail was designed as a 13-day round trip, starting and finishing in Sale, with options for cyclists to either complete the entire journey or to only undertake parts of the Trail depending on their level of expertise or time available.
Be aware that, regrettably, the East Gippsland Shire Council no longer supports the Howitt Bicycle Trail and signage in their Shire has been removed from the roads.
Signs are still in place in Wellington Shire and the entire Trail can still be followed by using appropriate maps.

The East Gippsland Shire has moved to stop speculation that a casino could be built at Lakes Entrance, in south-east Victoria.
But East Gippsland Shire chief executive officer Steve Kozlowski says the council has received no plans or applications for any casino projects.
He says community attitudes to gambling have changed in the past decade and there would be strong resistance to more gaming facilities.
