12.1 East Grinstead is one of the three main towns in Mid Sussex and with a population of around 25,000 is the largest settlement in the northern part of the District.
New highway provision at East Grinstead has not kept pace with the rate of earlier development and general traffic growth and the existing highway network is no longer adequate to cope with the traffic demands now being placed upon it.
Whilst the District and County Councils are currently studying a range of roads and transport issues at East Grinstead, new road provision sufficient to cater for major new development is unlikely to be achieved in the near future.

East Grinstead was once a very interesting station with trains literally arriving and departing to and from the north, south, east and west.
The third route to be built was that to the south, from East Grinstead to Culver Junction and with a branch from Horsted Keynes to Haywards Heath.
The South Croydon to East Grinstead section was authorized on 17 June 1878 and opened on 10 March 1884, together with a spur leading up to the high level line allowing through running from Croydon to Tunbridge Wells.

However the railway also made it possible for middle class commuters to live in East Grinstead and so, in the late 19th century, the population of the town grew rapidly.

East Grinstead Town FC moved to its current ground at East Court in 1967, after being given notice in 1958, to quit their previous ground at West Street, home of the town’s cricket club.
Despite all the problems in the past, East Court is a charming ground, tucked away down a long access road just after the entrance to the East Court area proper (which houses council offices) and being screened by trees, invisible from the main road which runs adjacent to the ground.
Formed in 1890 as East Grinstead FC, the club joined the Mid Sussex League in 1900 and were founder members of the Sussex County League upon its inception in 1920/21.
