It was formed by the amalgamation of the Township of East Gwillimbury with all the previously incorporated villages and hamlets within the township.
The main centres in East Gwillimbury are the villages of Holland Landing, Queensville, Sharon, and Mount Albert.

The Ontario government through the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation has partnered with 3M Canada to honour the efforts of community coaches.
The coaching initiative is being piloted in 12 communities across Ontario: East Gwillimbury, East Toronto, Oakville, St. Catharines, Kenora, Thunder Bay, Iroquois Falls, Huntsville, Huron-Kinloss, Owen Sound, Tillsonburg and London.
East of these twelve pilot communities will receive an information kit on the award, provided by the regional consultants of the ministry.
