As a result of the closing, the state of Maine now owns 47,000 acres of highly significant recreational and ecological lands, and FSM now holds an adjoining, complementary 282,000-acre conservation easement that ensures sustainable forestry, ecological protections, and traditional recreational access.
FSM is working with the Hancock Land Company, a 150-year-old family business, in Casco, to secure an easement on 6,000 acres of working forestland in the part of Maine that is most gravely threatened by development and sprawl.
The Forest Society of Maine was awarded the contract to complete the baseline documentation report for this easement.
