East Gwillimbury, is a town on the East Holland River in the Regional Municipality of York.
It was formed by the amalgamation of the Township of East Gwillimbury with all the previously incorporated villages and hamlets within the township.
The main centres in East Gwillimbury are the villages of Holland Landing, Queensville, Sharon, and Mount Albert.

Two proposals were initially floated for the "Hudson River Vehicular Tunnel," or the "Canal Street Tunnel." The first proposal, presented by the firm Jacobs and Davies, called for a bi-level tunnel measuring 31 feet in diameter.
Holland and the design team developed a revolutionary two-duct system - a system that utilized one duct to draw in fresh air, and the other to suck out exhaust air - that was adopted eventually by vehicular tunnels worldwide.

In 1665 Stuyvesant went to Holland to report, and labored to secure from the king the satisfaction of the sixth article in the treaty with Nicholls, which granted free trade.
On his return from Holland after the surrender, he spent the remainder of his life on his farm of sixty-two acres outside the city, called the Great Bouwerie, beyond which stretched woods and swamps to the little village of Haarlem.

In Albany, all tracks east of Fuller Road on the original alignment across Western Avenue (the original line to Morton and Delaware and a second line down State Street) were abandoned on September 30, 1844, when a new line from Fuller Road east to the Hudson River was opened.
While the Mohawk River was also a transportation conduit, it was not until the Erie Canal was constructed under Governor DeWitt Clinton in the 1820's that transportation to and from the west of the Capital District progressed substantially.
The Mohawk River was a prime example as its largest falls were very near its junction with the Hudson, and the falls and rapids at the village of Little Falls prevented easy passage westward.
