It was deprived of this after the Indian Mutiny (1857), and it ceased to exist as a legal entity in 1873.

Indians as Asians but they are called "Asians" in britain and East Asians are called "oriental".
But most of the Indian Culture that was transmitted from India to East Asia (via China) first went through an "asianizing" process, where what was transmitted no longer resembled the original indian version, but was adapted to East Asian tastes.
Indians, SE Asians, Filipinos, etc. are all Asian in the broadest sense of the term Asian (which is just a made up bullshit term anyways).

I live in Canada and I am having trouble understanding people with an East Indian accent and I am not sure if I am the only one.
The reason it's called East Indian is because we are not Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.) and not Native Americans; also called Indians.
Being East Indian but born in the US, I find any accent thats hard to understand a bit annoying but it's true most foreigners try to be as fluent as possible.
