The district shares an international border with Tibet in the north, Bhutan in the west, Tawang district in the northwest, and East Kameng district in the east.
The Kameng Frontier Division was renamed as the Kameng District.
However, due to political reasons, the Kameng district was bifurcated between East Kameng and West Kameng on the June 1, 1980.

The Monpa (Chinese: 门巴族, ménbàzú, Tibetan: ?པ) are an ethnic group in the territory of Arunachal Pradesh, with a population of 50,000, centered in the districts of Tawang and West Kameng.
Of the 45,000 Monpas who live in Arunachal Pradesh, about 20,000 of them live in Tawang district, where they constitute about 97% of the district's population, and almost all of the remainder can be found in the West Kameng district, where they form about 77% of the district's population.
A small number of them may be found in the district of East Kameng and Bhutan (2,500).

 Malaria cases high in Arunachal, toll touches 83
Apart from inadequate surveillance and proper counter measures by the state health department, the spread of the menace like wildfire was attributed to acute shortage of medicines in many places of the state.
Out of the 178 patients being checked in the camp, 100 were detected with malaria, 12 gastroenteritis and ten with respiratory tract infection, the report informed.
It is worth mentioning here that during the current monsoon, malaria has claimed 33 in Papum Pare district, 27 in Tirap, 18 in East Kameng and five in other parts of the state.

The Bhareli-II H.E. Project, located in the West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh, envisages utilization of water of the Kameng River, one of the major tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra, for generation of electric power on a run-of-the-river type development harnessing a gross head of 54m and design discharge of 256 cumec.
A 77m high concrete gravity dam is proposed across River Kameng, which will divert water through 5 steel lined penstocks, each of 7.4 m diameter and 110m length, to a surface power house at the toe of the dam, with an installation of 5 units of 120 MW each.
Kameng Dam H.E. Project is located in the East Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh.
