In January, a study in the medical journal The Lancet showed that the number of male deaths in Scotland from cirrhosis of the liver had quadrupled since the 1950s, with the female death rate almost trebling.
Scotland needed a "major cultural shift" to address a faster rising rate of drink-related deaths than anywhere in western Europe, it warned.

Early in 1953 the Revd Kenneth Morrison was appointed to form the nucleus of a congregation in the new town of East Kilbride.
On the east wall there is a large cross on both the outside and inside of the building surrounded by 19 small windows, speculation is that these are for the 19 saints of Scotland, however the architects plans do not comment on the number of windows chosen.
In 1964 the chancel was reordered, the altar was brought forward and down onto a platform with a space being created behind the altar against the east wall for the choir, new altar rails where purchased and the pulpit removed.

Situated 12 miles (19.3 km) south of Glasgow and 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Paisley on an exposed upland plateau, East Kilbride is Scotland's sixth largest town and was its first New Town being designated as such on 6th May 1947 as part of the solution to Glasgow's overspill population problem.
