Korea also served as one of several cultural bridges between its two regional neighbors, taking pride in passing along advanced Chinese political, philosophical, religious, and literary ideas and models to what Koreans consistently perceived as a less well- developed Japan.
At the turn of the century, Korea was the object of two wars as China and Japan in turn fought to maintain footholds on the peninsula and to exclude a Russia keenly interested in Korea's warm-water ports.
South Korea's relationship with the United States increasingly was focused on bilateral economic issues, spurred by a current account surplus that began in the mid-1980s and increasing United States pressures to open South Korean markets for agricultural and industrial products as well as telecommunications and finance services.

Simulated branches of the Tsushima Warm Current carry subtropical water from the Tsushima Strait northward to the northeast Japan Sea and Tatarsky Strait, where buoyant water is seen as elevation of the sea surface (Fig.2).
The eastern branches of the Tsushima Current are intensified in the 1950 Experiment, while the western branch, the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) flowing northward along the Korean coast is intensified in the 1999 Experiment (Trusenkova et al., 2003).
Observed warm streamers and eddies originating from the EKWC penetrate as far north as 42°N (westward of 132°E; Danchenkov et al., 1997).

Current climate models suggest that this provides an important positive feedback, roughly doubling the sensitivity of the surface temperature to an increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gases (3-5).
The essence of the current Bjerknes hypothesis, as it is called, is that ENSO arises as a coupled cycle in which anomalies in sea surface temperature in the Pacific cause the trade winds to strengthen or slacken and, in turn, drive the changes in ocean circulation that produce anomalous sea surface temperatures.
Currently, there is considerable interest in the consequences of climate change for the interannual variability of climate itself, particularly for ENSO and associated phenomena.

Wintertime heat loss at the sea surface is high in the subtropical area of warm currents and higher SST and in the northern Japan Sea and Tatarsky Strait of lowest air temperature; latent heat flux is highest in the south and sensible heat flux is highest in the north (Figs.4, 5).
In 1999 the western Japan Sea is occupied by warm surface and intermediate water associated with the intensified EKWC even in winter, while in 1950 the cyclonic gyre extends to 37°N, as seen from SSH distribution (Figs.5d, a).
The EKWC intensified in the 1990s supplies heat to the northwest Japan Sea, in contrast with the situation in the 1950s characterized by southeastward expansion of the intensified cyclonic gyre.

The southern regions experience a relatively warm and wet climate similar to that of Japan, affected by warm ocean waters including the East Korea Warm Current.
The entire peninsula, however, is affected by similar general patterns, including the East Asian monsoon in midsummer and the frequent incidence of typhoons in autumn.

INTRODUCTION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The Tsushima Warm Current Water and the less-saline Surface Water flowing through the Korea Strait predominantly drive the upper layer circulation of the East Sea.
These currents are closely associated with annual episodes of the fluctuation in separation latitude at the Korea coast, the formation of mesoscale eddies, and the southward intrusion by NKCC.
Northward flow is the strongest at the core of EKWC, and the southward flows, due to swirling motions around a warm eddy, are usually found to the east (outwards) of EKWC.

Most of the major current systems are realistically reproduced at 1/8 degree, including separation of the East Korea Warm Current near 38N.
The Nearshore (NB) of the Tsushima Warm Current appears as a robust eastern boundary current along the coast of Honshu.
The primary benefit of increasing the grid resolution from 1/8 to 1/16 degree is the reversal of the flow offshore of North Korea (40-42N) from northward (unrealistic) to southward (observed).

Origin of the Tsushima Warm Current
Then, we try to identify the origin of the volume transport of the Tsushima Warm Current and its seasonality.
According to this study, about 66 % of the volume transport of the Tsushima Warm Current comes directly from the Kuroshio region in autumn, crossing the shelf edge of the East China Sea (see A).
Thus one of the critical conditions to make a separation branch is that, the Kuroshio turns to the east and leaves the shelf slope southwest of Kyushu.

The capping of the water column by increasingly warm surface waters suppresses deep convection in certain regions, with the result that phytoplankton are held nearer to the surface throughout the winter.
The deep water warming and the depletion of oxygen in the deep layer are major characteristics in the East Sea (Japan Sea) in regard with climate change.
Though the reason for the slow down of deep convection is believed due to the warmd air related to the global warming, we have investigated another possible mechanism related to this matter, that is, the role of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) which is the unique source of heat and salt via the lateral boundary.
