  East Lancashire Railway : History
It is doubtful if, in the railway mania of the 1840's anyone could have foreseen, that less than 100 years later, many lines would have fallen out of use but for the efforts of railway preservation societies.
The East Lancashire Railway Preservation Society was formed in 1968 with a view to preserving a section of the former East Lancashire Railway, focusing on a section of line near Helmshore, but unfortunately this plan did not come to fruition.
The East Lancashire Light Railway Company which leases the railway from the Trust and is responsible for the day to day running of the railway and is the formal legal structure under which the Society works.

 East Lancashire Railway : Home
A trip on the East Lancashire Railway is journey back in time.
It was opened in 1846 to link the Manchester to Bolton line with Radcliffe and was a popular passenger and freight route which served the Irwell Valley from Bury, via Ramsbottom, to Rawtenstall and beyond.
1972 saw the last passengers travel on the Bury to Rawtenstall section, and that would have been the end of an era had the East Lancashire Preservation Society not been committed to restoring the line to its former glory.

The train was run by the privately-operated East Lancashire Railway, on the line running from Bury in Greater Manchester to Rawtenstall.
Lancashire police, fire service and an air ambulance were called to the crash, which happened as the train pulled into Irwell Vale station on its way to Bury.
It was reopened by the ELR with the help of Bury and Rossendale Councils in 1991 as a weekend tourist attraction.

The "La'al Ratty", as the railway is known locally, was originally opened in 1975 to bring iron ore from nearby mines to the Furness Railway on the coast.
The old Furness Railway Station has been converted into "The Ratty Arms" a warm friendly inn where bar meals and suppers are served all year round with a choice of real ales.
The Railway Museum at Ravenglass houses an exhibition of Railway memorabilia and local history with photographic collection, relics and models accompanied by audio-visual presentation.

The Manchester, Bury, and Rossendale Railway was incorporated in 1844, as a means of affording direct communication between Bury and Manchester, with the extension to Rawtenstall as an afterthought.
In the meantime, the Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway was acquired.
The East Lancashire Railway built the Skelmersdale Branch from Ormskirk to Skelmersdale and Rainford Junction, which opened on 1 March 1858.

E.L.R. Each year the East Lancashire Railway summer gala has the reputation for being the major Diesel Event of the year.

The wreath on the smokebox door was carried in memory of two ELR signalmen who recently passed away.
The 9F was brought into steam on the 10th/11th of April in order to carry out checks over the East Lancashire Railway's track at Bury.
The "outer" (down line) curve at Bury South is not currently in use but on 11th April 2005, the ELR's permanent way engineers and the Chief Mechanical Engineer conducted tests with 92214 to assess the running of a 9F on their service trains.

The company also absorbed several other lines, but its relationship with the East Lancashire Railway was distinctive in that it retained a distinctive stock with separate numbers (and names) and maintained (an constructed) locomotives at its works in Bury.
Richard Walker was both a Director of the ELR and supplier of locomotives to the ELR.
The trouble lay with the management and the directorate who were prepared to allow the railway to degenerate into one of the worst in the country in order to achieve a high dividend, though it must have been obvious to many that this could not continue indefinitely.

According to Steam Railway magazine, it is hoped to operate a series of circular tours with this loco in the near future.
Galatea has been moved to the West Coast Railway Company at Carnforth for restoration - this will be one of the most complex restoration jobs to be attempted on a preserved locomotive, requiring the casting of two new driving wheels, as the originals were cut when the loco derailed at Barry Scrapyard.

It moved to Birmingham Railway Museum under its own steam on December 20th 1967 where it was occasionally run in the yard, or on the main line.
It was loaned to East Lancashire Railway in August 1993.

The National Railway Museum kindly agreed to release 1023 "Western Fusilier" for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Diesel Gala on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th April.
The locomotive left the railway for a short period to be exhibited at private EWS staff open day at Bristol Barton Road on Saturday 7th July.
The East Lancashire Railway's main annual Diesel Gala was held from Thursday 12th to Sunday 15th July.

On the first Sunday of every month, a site tour is conducted by Kevin Delaney, the railways Volunteer Liaison Officer, starting from the booking office at Bolton Street station, at 12 noon.

The station was situated on the Ormskirk to Rainford Junction line which was opened by East Lancashire Railway on 1.3.1858.
By 1864 the St. Helens Railway was part of the LNWR.

An investigation is under way after a man was killed when his car was hit by a steam train on a level crossing in Lancashire.
The driver Thomas Holt, 63, died from his injuries, but his passenger - his19-year-old daughter - escaped unhurt.
There were 16 passengers on board the train, but none were hurt.

Some railway enthusiasts in our town decided that they loved old locomotives so much that they would put some old disused railway stations and lines into use and renovate old steam and diesel locomotives, running them for pleasure trips.
They charge for the trips, of course, to help towards the cost of fixing up the old locomotives, and their volunteer society (which they have called the East Lancashire Railway) is flourishing.
