Ministers had proposals to extend postal voting pilots in the June elections thrown back in their faces today, as the House of Lords rejected the plan in the latest round of parliamentary "ping pong" between the two chambers.
Voting was 135 to 106, a majority of 29, during the European parliamentary and local elections (pilots) bill.
In reply, Labour's Lord Hoyle warned that "the leader of the BNP, Nick Griffin, is standing for the European elections in the North West, and it will be to the shame of this house if it turns down postal ballots in the North West and we enable the BNP to gain a seat in Europe".

I'm not jealous of the Scottish Parliament, having spent the last four of the last five years in Scotland I can see what a laughing stock it is. But I believe that the people of the UK should be constitutionally equal, and that means English, Welsh and Northern Irish Parliaments with equal powers to Scotland's.
A consultation draft of the East of England plan was published by the East of England Regional Assembly on 8 December and is currently open to public consultation until 16 March 2005.
The Campaign for an English Parliament is a non-political group who merely want England to be recognised as a country in her own right by means of our own parliament, and not as "the regions of Britain" as New Labour now describes us.

There seems to have been a backroom deal between the Party of the European Socialists (PES), which includes the UK Labour party, and the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats (EPP-ED) groups, which includes the UK Conservative party - the two largest groups in the European Parliament, who mostly voted for the Directive.
You can find their contact details on the UK Office of the European Parliament website, which, astonishingly, provides no easy links to the voting record of any individual UK MEP.

Though the third of my given names is Innes, and I have a tartan tie to go with it, I was horrified by the suggestion by JA Pallister (News & Star, June 8) that the Scottish skinhead, John Reid, should challenge Gordon Brown as Tony Blair’s successor, when the latter does the decent thing.
Also, the Scottish Parliament is funded as a percentage of government spending in England, via the Barnett formula.
