PRINCE Charles was met with warm smiles yesterday after he braved gale-force winds to become the first royal to visit the Channel Island of Herm.
The Prince told teachers that politicians often went out of their way to stress schools and universities must "deliver the skilled workforce the UK needs if it is to remain competitive in the knowledge economy".
Prince Charles's BAe 146 from the Royal Squadron touched down at the island's airport at 1.30pm to begin a two-day visit to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the ceding of the Channel Islands to Britain.

On the east, north, and west, it is bounded by the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and on the south by the Northumberland Strait.
The potatoes of Prince Edward Island are famous for their excellence, not only in the British Provinces, but also in the United States; beans and peas, and all sorts of esculents and culinary vegetables grow to perfection, and yield large returns.

The first white man to land on the island (and record it) was Jacques Cartier in his 1534 voyage.
The island was divided in 1720 between St. Pierre, M. Farges, and M. Moras.
After the island was cleared of its inhabitants (though some had hidden away, and some made their way back), England had it surveyed in 1767 to divide it up for their own settlers.

Of the other bells of Prince Edward Island, we know the fate of only one, that of Malpec, even though we know but little of the vicissitudes that it must have suffered during the years which followed the Expulsion.
If the four parishes which were the daughters of the mother church, that of Port Lajoie, had their bells, we can be sure that the said mother church had its bell also, although there are no records to that effect.
From Prince Edward Island, we will move next week to the St. John River, in New Brunswick, where the story of its bells is most interesting.

Colin MacDonald, tacksman of Boisdale, which comprised most of the south end of South Uist, was a Protestant, and decided to force his tenants to renounce their Roman Catholic faith by refusing to grant renewals of their leases unless they changed to his religious beliefs.
The tacksmen had lost their place in Island society forever, and what we are seeing now appears to be the younger sons of tacksmen quitting the Scottish Islands for economic necessity.

Her brother Father Trainor maybe Joseph Trainor was a priest at a parrish in Prince Edward Island (he was still living in 1963 and performed my parent's wedding in Winthrop, Mass.) Mary Ann married an unknown Hughes and they had one child "Kate" Katherine Cecilia Hughes or Kathleen Cecilia Hughes.

A story that was passed on to me recently: When Edward was sick and near death, a couple brothers (may have been one, not sure) had tried to get Edward to renounce his catholicism and revert back -- which caused futher tension with the rest of the family.

Some of the Acadians who were deported in 1755 were encouraged by the French king to settle in Louisiana, where their descendants, the Cajuns, have become a dominant cultural influence in many a Louisiana parish.

One of Porter’s greatest Acadian-related finds was actually a gift from a friend, Alma Buote, who bequeathed some of her family treasures to him, not in the form of gold and jewels, but in a gem of a collection of old photographs, including tin types.
Most valuable to local historians are photos of her father, Francois, and grandfather Gilbert Buote who co-founded Prince Edward Island’s first French language newspaper, L’Impartial, in 1893, which ran until 1915.
Now after carefully preserving the Buote collection for four decades, Porter has passed them on to the Centre for Acadian Research of Prince Edward Island’s archives located in the same building as the Acadian Museum in Miscouche.
